Dual-screen monitor problems with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)
Problem: Could not get multiple monitors to work (one laptop screen, one external widescreen) with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)
Symptoms: Blank screen when turning off “mirror screens” mode.
Resolution: Disable or remove compiz. (System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects -> None)
Other Karmic annoyances…
Karmic has an upgraded Grub, which looks to be a right dogs dinner. Rather than use “menu.lst”, it’s all dynamically generated. Or it would be, if it worked… It’ll boot Karmic fine, but the config for Jaunty won’t work. And cos it’s automatically generated, I can’t manually fix the config file.
Anyhow, it’s easy to revert back to the old version for the time being…
One other annoyance: I have several NFS mounts which automount from /etc/fstab. In Karmic, a Nautilus window pops up for each one as it’s mounted. Very annoying, when there are six of them :-(

Hey thanks, just saved me a lot of trouble by mentioning the “work around” for the dual screen.
